SOCAN, members shine at Europe’s largest hip-hop/R&B music conference

SOCAN and its members were highlighted at showcases, receptions, and panels during the fifth edition of Europe’s largest hip-hop/R&B music conference, New Skool Rules, held this year on May 19-21, in Rotterdam. 

On Friday May 19, SOCAN Director, A&R, Rodney Murphy co-hosted – along with co-presenter representatives Charlie Wall-Andrews of The SOCAN Foundation and Trisha Carter of the Canadian Independent Music Association (CIMA) – a “Meet the Canadians” welcome reception for delegates. Later the same night at the BIRD club, SOCAN co-presented the Canadian Blast R&B Showcase, where our members JENNA, Tessa, AHI and D’eve Archer – selected especially by New Skool Rules – got to perform before a packed house of international music industry professionals.

On Saturday, May 20, SOCAN members met with international key influencers at a “Meet the Canadians” speed dating session at Hopflein Station. Participating members and their companies included Duane "D.O." Gibson of Northstarr Entertainment, Richard Lawrence of Glatt Music Inc., Kaelen Klypak of  SaskMusic, Dwayne Marcial of Musik Iz the Motive, and Melissa MacMaster of 902HipHop. Other partcipating members included Dynesti Williams, Dizzy, and J. Redd.

”Meet the Canadians!”

On Sunday, May 21, Murphy took part in a  panel, “Exploring Foreign Markets,” where he presented the case for Canada as a thriving music market for European hip-hop and R&B artists. The same day, SOCAN co-presented the Canadian Blast Hip-Hop Showcase at De Unie, where our members DGS Samurai Champs, McEvoy, King Bliss, Myer Clarity, D.O., Quake Matthews, Monique Spence, iLLvibe, and Devontee with DJ Power offered their beats and rhymes to another roomful of worldwide music industry personnel.

On Monday, May 22, Murphy and many of our members enjoyed a post-New Skool Rules mixer event boat cruise around the canals of nearby Amsterdam.
