SOCAN presented a popular and well-attended panel, “Career Development: Songwriting & Publishing,” during the 2018 January Music Meeting, presented by Music Manitoba at their offices in Winnipeg, on Jan. 27, 2018.

Under the direction of moderator Elise Roller, the panelists – Melissa Cameron, of SOCAN; Vivian Barclay, of publisher Warner Chappell Music; singer-songwriter Taylor Knox; and songwriter/producer Karen Kosowski – offered attending songwriters some guidance on how to get their songs into the ears of industry people outside of their current circle.

The fifth edition of the January Music Meeting, held Jan. 25-28, 2018, welcomed some of Canada’s top music industry professionals, in a conference that included group sessions, discussion groups, networking mixers, and one-on-one meetings. Representatives from the label, agency, management, festival, publishing, and publicity sides of the industry converged to discuss the state of Canada’s independent music industry and provide concrete advice on how to succeed in the constantly evolving music business. January Music Meeting offered Manitoba's music community a rare opportunity to network with a cross-section of experts, while connecting with local artists and industry peers. The event was supported in part by both SOCAN and The SOCAN Foundation.

Among the panelists were Alexa Dirks (a.k.a. Begonia); Dan Hawie, of Last Gang Records; Rebecca Webster, of Webster Media Consulting; Stu Anderson, of Mighty Cypress Talent (manager of Bros. Landreth); and Sam Rayner, of the Canadian Independent Music Association (CIMA).
