SOCAN presented its first-ever “From Canada to LA: SOCAN All-Star Composers” panel at Raleigh Studios in the Chaplin Theater in Los Angeles on the evening of June 14, 2017. Presented in association with the Society of Composers and Lyricists and Impact 24, the event featured screenings of film and television program excerpts, and discussion with their SOCAN #ComposersWhoScore: Amin Bhatia, Darren Fung, Alexis Marsh and Jeff Toyne. The panel was moderated by Zach Laws, Contributing Editor of Gold Derby.

Among the tips on screen composing, both Bhatia and Toyne suggested that novices are best served by being as available as possible, while Fung said that, when composing, it’s important to know when to take a short break from the studio for a few minutes to refresh your thinking. Marsh explained how an initial obstacle led to a full-time composing job for Animal Kingdom, indicating that it’s helpful to look for opportunities even in adversity. And both she and Bhatia recommended working (as they each do) with a partner – the right partner – to split the often heavy workload. (Marsh works with Samuel Jones, Bhatia with Ari Posner.)

"It was great to partner with the Society of Composers and Lyricists to shine some light on our amazing audio-visual composer community" said Chad Richardson, General Manager, SOCAN L.A. Division. "The talent of our member pool in Los Angeles is world-class, and it was great to see so many talented members come out to join us for the evening."

After the panel, there was a reception where aspiring SOCAN movie and television “ComposersWhoScore and Society of Composers and Lyricists members had the chance to meet and network with music supervisors, film and TV directors, and other screen industry professionals.
