SOCAN presented separate No. 1 Song Award to WondaGurl (Ebony Oshurinde) and Eestbound (Brian Van Mierlo) for co-writing Travi$ Scott’s “Antidote,” which scaled the peak of the MuchMusic Countdown Chart on Feb. 12, 2016.

WondaGurl and Eestbound cooked up the beat, and the song was co-written with Thomas Brenneck, Leon Michels, Homer Steinweiss, David Guy, Nick Movshon, and Travi$ Scott (Jacques Webster) himself (all BMI except Guy, ASCAP). The SOCAN publisher for “Antidote” is BMG Rights Management Canada Inc.

SOCAN Director, A&R, Rodney Murphy presented the award to WondaGurl just after she’d demonstrated her professional, hugely successful beat-making and producing skills at a SOCAN-sponsored “Cooking Beats” panel on Nov. 30, 2017, during the inaugural Music Week at YouTube Space Toronto at George Brown College. Murphy honoured WondaGurl for so often being “the only woman in the room” as a hip-hop producer, to which she replied, “there’s gonna be a lot more soon.”

Murphy also presented the award to Eestbound on Nov. 16, 2017, in the Harmony Lounge at the SOCAN Toronto office, where he was visiting to touch base and sit for a brief interview (to be uploaded to in the near future). “You only signed up to SOCAN three years ago, and you made us look good by succeeding so strongly,” said Murphy, while Eestbound said receiving the award was “amazing, crazy.”

The YouTube video for the song has been viewed more than 220 million times, and the song and is a platinum seller, certified by the Recording Industry Association of America. It went Top 20 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart, and Top 10 on Billboard U.S. Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Scott has performed the song on both Jimmy Kimmel Live and Late Night with Seth Meyers.

Both WondaGurl and Eestbound tell the story of how they were eating dinner together in a steakhouse and heard some music they thought would be great for Travi$ Scott. Inspired, they created a beat and sent it to Scott. They didn’t even know he’d used it until they saw a video of him performing “Antidote,” and recognized the beat they’d made.

SOCAN congratulates the entire team behind “Antidote” for its great success!
