SOCAN presented a “Cooking Beats” panel with beat-maker/producer FrancisGotHeat at the SOCAN-sponsored 2017 edition of IMSTA FESTA, a free, one-day music tech conference held in the Rogers Communications building at Ryerson University on Saturday, Oct. 14, 2017.

Young beat-makers, producers, artists and managers jam-packed the room for the panel, moderated by Former SOCAN A&R Co-Ordinator Andreas Rizek, now A&R at Ultra Music Publishing. FrancisGotHeat explained and demonstrated some of the technical secrets of his trade, breaking down the construction of the beats he created for “4 da squaaw” by Isaiah Rashad, “DRUGS” by Ab-Soul, “Jealousy” by Roy Woods, and “4422” by Drake (featuring Sampha).

The fast-rising producer also explained how he’s come so far, much of it amounting to, luck, networking, and working hard. He advised people to travel and work in other cities worldwide, and explained how he himself – right after graduating high school, with very few plans – went to Atlanta, where he found inspiration, a fresh perspective, and new people with whom he could work.

There were also various other panels, booths, demonstrations, and masterclasses available to all attendees at IMSTA FESTA 2017.
