SOCAN presented a “Cooking Beats” panel with Murda Beatz at the SOCAN-sponsored 2016 edition of IMSTA FESTA, a free, one-day music tech conference held in the Rogers Communications building at Ryerson University on Saturday, Oct. 15, 2016.

Young beat-makers packed the room to hear producer Murda Beatz – who’s worked with Drake and PartyNextDoor – explain and demonstrate some of the secrets of his trade. He broke down the layers of the beats he created for “Pipe It Up” by Migos and “Back on the Road” by Gucci Mane featuring Drake. He created a beat live from scratch in a mere 20 minutes, using FL Studio software. He also explained how he’s come so far, by hitting people up on Twitter, after researching their teams and sending them beats.

“When you’re coming up as a producer, send your beats out,” said Murda Beatz. “Get your name out there as much as you can and build your brand.” He also said that he doesn’t believe in having all the fanciest plug-ins or gear, but rather “mastering what you’ve got.”

During the conference, SOCAN had a mobile sign-up station for new members, where they could join SOCAN on the spot. Our booth also allowed for face-to-face answers to any questions people might typically have about the royalty-earning process.

There were also various other booths, demonstrations, panels and masterclasses available to all attendees at IMSTA FESTA 2016.
