SOCAN sponsors songwriter award at 2012 NOMFAs

SOCAN is sponsoring the Songwriter of the Year award at the ninth annual Northern Ontario Music and Film Awards (NOMFAs), presented by Music and Film in Motion (MFM) on Apr. 28, 2012, in the Great Hall at Laurentian University in Sudbury.
The nominees, all SOCAN members, are:
• Kalle Mattson for "Singing Knives"
• Angela Evans for "Still Hope"
• Cindy Doire for "Don’t Let The Bastards Bring You Down "
Cindy Doire is also nominated for Vocal Performance of the Year, for "Too Long," and Album of the Year by a Solo Artist, for Sticks and Mud, while Kalle Mattson is also nominated for Album of the Year by a Duo or Group, for Anchors.
The NOMFAs will present 10 Northern artists with awards for excellence in music and film. In addition to the awards, MFM host a conference component from Apr. 26-28.
On April 27, Rodney Murphy will also host a panel, "Rights and Royalties: How Songwriters, Performers and Publishers Get Paid," aiming to familiraize attendees with the different performance rights and neighbouring rights organizations that exist in Canada and how they work and advocate on Canadian artists’ behalf. Scheduled participants are Lee-Anne Wielonda, ACTRA Recording Artists’ Collecting Society; Chris Budd, Bearsuit Publishing; Stacey Mitsopulos B.A., LL.B., Cookie Jar Entertainment; and Bob Wiseman, Artist.
