Singer-songwriter Steve Maloney won the Ron Hynes SOCAN Songwriter of the Year Award, presented during MusicNL (Newfoundland and Labrador) Week 2017, held Oct. 12-15 at venues throughout St. John’s, NL.

SOCAN Director, A&R Rodney Murphy and Newfoundland-based SOCAN member Amelia Curran co-presented the award to Maloney, who also earned the honours for Alternative Artist and Country Artist of the Year, out of five nominations.

Other three-time winners were Janet Cull, who earned the FACTOR Album of the Year (for Real Tough Love), Pop/Rock Artist and Female Artist of the Year, and The Kubasonics, who won Group and Folk/Roots Artist of the Year, and the Fans’ Choice Entertainer of the Year honour.

During the MusicNL conference, Murphy presented a SOCAN info session explaining how the organization works on behalf of songwriters, and held a series of one-on-one meetings with key East Coast music industry personnel attending the conference.

The conference week culminated in the 25th Anniversary MusicNL Awards Show on Oct. 15 at the St. John’s Convention Centre, hosted by former Great Big Sea frontman, actor, author, singer-songwriter and SOCAN member Alan Doyle.
