The 39th edition of the Gala de l’ADISQ shook the walls of Montréal’s Place des Arts on Sunday, Oct. 29, 2017. One of the main gripes of Québec hip-hop artists (a lack of recognition) was finally answered that night, as the Hip-Hop Album of the Year award was presented during the main televised gala. This year’s winners, Alaclair Ensemble, marked the occasion by dedicating their Félix trophy, for their album Les frères cueilleurs, to all past, present and future rappers in the province.

In this video interview from the gala press room, SOCAN speaks with four of the band’s members, who insisted on the symbolic significance of their prize, and shared a bit of their approach to collective songwriting:

As for Émile Bilodeau, he was quite satisfied with his Breakout Artist of the Year Award, which marks the accomplishment of his dream of reaching a wide audience with his energetic, humorous music. The young artist was onstage during the most recent SOCAN Awards Gala to pay homage to Robert Charlebois, and he confides that his very presence onstage was as gratifying as winning a prize.
