Geneviève Toupin

Folk-pop singer-songwriter

Song – "Plus les années passent" - Now Playing ...

Bio
Manitoba-born singer-songwriter Geneviève Toupin has been a lover of words and music from an early age. After being introduced to piano, guitar and singing by her grandmother, a dedicated musician, she studied piano and classical singing in German, Italian, Spanish and Latin for 12 years. Having decided at age 19 to pursue a career uniting her two main passions, music and writing, she moved to Paris, where she sold miniature replicas of the Eiffel Tower and Pont Neuf by day and wrote songs on an old upright piano by night.

After receiving a grant from the Manitoba Film and Sound Recording Development Corporation in 2000 and recording an EP of four of her original songs, Toupin studied for a year (2004) at the École nationale de la chanson de Granby. She settled in Montreal, where she started attracting considerable attention as a performer with a strong stage presence and well-rounded songs. Early recognition included a scholarship from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec in research and creation. Toupin was a Festival de la chanson de Granby finalist (2006) and won the Coup de pouce pour la Bourse Rideau (2008) thanks to her performance at the Vue sur la relève festival (2007). She also won the Réseau des Grands Espaces – ROSEQ award. Toupin was a guest of the Pully à l’heure du Québec festival in Switzerland and was chosen by famed Cajun singer-songwriter Zachary Richard to represent Manitoba on a compilation album that also featured Richard Desjardins and Marie-Jo Thério, among others.

With songs that have travelled from Moncton, N.B., to the Francofête, through the Déferlantes de Capbreton in France, Quebec’s Gaspé region, Abitibi, Tadoussac, Ottawa, Montreal and the Francoforce tour (that included 60 shows in 14 Canadian cities), Toupin has proven that her songs have a strong future outside the prairies of her native province.

Her folk-pop style is inspired by artists as varied as Frida Kahlo, Barbara, Loretta Lynn and Mara Tremblay. An intense and authentic individual, Toupin is an accomplished and painstaking songwriter who considers being onstage to be both a privilege and a responsibility. She expresses herself simply, leaving plenty of room for the music itself, and finds inspiration in common themes that she develops with her warm voice, hypnotic gaze and attractive accent.

In the fall of 2009, Toupin released her first, self-titled album. Produced by Benoit Morier (Chic Gamine, Madrigaïa), it contains a collection of catchy, personal songs showcasing her warm vocals and intimate songwriting on a musical background made up of upright piano, vibraphonette, banjo and lap steel.
