Leïla Jolin-Dahel

Singer-songwriter

Song – "Happy Ending" - Now playing...

Bio
Leïla Jolin-Dahel, whose mother was an organist, started listening to music while still in the womb. By the age of two, she was pretending to play music on whatever she could reach, and at six, to her family’s great relief, she finally discovered her true instrument and began piano lessons. After performing in a number of secondary school concerts and writing her first composition, “Petite,” at 15, she signed up for a bachelor's degree in pop singing at UQAM (University of Quebec at Montreal). There, she learned to tame her voice with music teacher Julie Leblanc and developed her piano technique with François Bourassa. In 2006, against all expectations, she joined the stoner rock band Madking Ludwig. In 2008, she became the main singer of Paroles d’Amoureuse, a musical review staged in Théâtre de la Grande Rencontre in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, east of Montreal.

In January 2009, following a series of gigs in Montreal bars such as La Place À Côté, Le Petit Cabaret, Le Pub Jacques-Cartier and The Barfly, Jolin-Dahel became the enthusiastic host of Les Rendez-vous de la Chanson Vivante at Montreal’s Pub du Quartier Latin, where she met many of the city’s upcoming musical talents. This year, she was a song competition finalist in La Tuque (Des chansons plein La Tuque) and a semi-finalist in Trois-Pistoles (Festival Trois-Pistoles en chansons).

Jolin-Dahel’s strong voice, eclectic tastes and disarming honesty make for unusual songs that are both innocent and lucid. She is gradually moving away from her initial influences to develop a true personal style marked by musical experimentation and comedic winks to pop culture. Ten of her songs are currently available for listening on her website, and Jolin-Dahel received a SOCAN Best Song Award at Festival de la chanson de St-Ambroise in August 2010.
