For a second year, SOCAN is partnering up with the Société pour l’avancement de la chanson d’expression française (SACEF) and its Ma première Place des Arts (MPPdA) competition to present the SOCAN-ARTISTI Original Song Award.

SOCAN called upon its songwriter and music publisher members for songs, from which to build a catalogue that the eight singers of the 2018 edition will sing. They’ll all be copmeting for the brand-new Prix Chanson Originale SOCAN-ARTISTI, which comes with a $2,000 cash prize, split equally between the singer and songwriter(s) of the song selected by the joint SOCAN and ARTISTI panel of juries. The prize will be awarded during the MPPdA finals on May 16, 2018. The songwriters, chosen by a panel of experts and industry professionals, are: Amélie Larocque, Johannie Tremblay, Sophie Pelletier and Gautier Marinof, Émilie Cornut, Marie-Ange Crochetière, Éric Charland, Sébastien Lacombe, as well as Antoine Lachance and François Larivière.

All contestants will also have the chance to participate in a private event presented by SOCAN, where they’ll meet several guest SOCAN songwriter and composer members – allowing them to potentially enrich their repertoire and network with music creators and other artists.

During the press conference on Jan. 18, 2018, at Place des Arts’ Espace culturel Georges-Émile-Lapalme, SACEF executives introduced the MPPdA’s 32 contestants: eight singers, 16 singer-songwriters, and eight bands that will compete in the eight shows of the quarter-finals, from Feb. 6 through March 27, 2018, at Place des Arts’ Claude-Léveillée Hall. Three semi-finals will also be held on Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m. in the same hall: April 10 for the singers, April 17 for the singer-songwriters, and April 24 for the bands.

The jury of this 24th edition of MPPdA will be composed of Ima, Jérôme Minière and Jean-Guy Prince during the quarter-finals, and Catherine Durand, Sébastien Charest, and Moran during the semi-finals. The host of this year’s shows will be regular SOCAN online magazine Paroles & Musique contributor Olivier Robillard-Laveaux, and the shows will be televised on MATV.

The mentorship offered to each contestant has been entrusted to SOCAN members Andréanne Alain, Éric Goulet and Jean-François Beaudet. In addition to the many prizes that will be handed out, the mentors – representatives of current trends in music – were mandated to help prepare the finalists in each of the three categories. The mentors are La Bronze, David Jalbert, Laurence Nerbonne, Daran, Mara Tremblay, Dany Placard, Marie-Annick Lépine and Olivier Langevin.
